The Color of Care Film Screening
The VCU Office of Health Equity hosts The Color of Care film screening, panel discussion and reception on September 27 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., at the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), 601 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220. This documentary from executive producer, Oprah Winfrey, chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare in the United States and how COVID-19 has exposed the tragic consequences of this inequity. Dr. Carlos Smith, Director, Diversity, Ethics and Inclusion at the VCU School of Dentistry, will lead a panel discussion following the film. Light refreshments and fellowship will be available immediately following the program. This event, co-sponsored by VCU Health and VCU School of Dentistry, is free and open to the community, but space is limited.

Meet your panelists
Moderator: Carlos Smith, DDS is the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Director of Ethics Curriculum and Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Public Health and Policy at Virginia Commonwealth
Dr. Kimberly Nichele Brown is an associate professor of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies (GSWS) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where she formally served as chair of GSWS as well as the Department of African American Studies.
Dr. David A. Lanning is a professor of surgery and pediatrics in the VCU School of Medicine, the interim Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the VCU Medical Center, and co-surgeon-in-chief for the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.of Ethics Curriculum and Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Public Health and Policy at Virginia Commonwealth
Dr. Melissa Viray is the acting director for the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts. She is a board certified infectious diseases and internal medicine physician. She has been closely involved with the COVID-19 response in Richmond City and Henrico County Health Districts, both for containment efforts and for vaccination.
Ms. White is a VCU Health System (VCUHS) patient and clinical trials participant.
